Subject: XML 1.1 awaiting Schema 1.1?

From: Ankh

There are communities who very much needed XML 1.1, although I don't know if they're using it already.

Speaking unofficially, but wearing my XML Activity Lead hat, I can say that I won't be happy if W3C XML Schema isn't published by the middle of next year, and I'm fully expecting to see a draft later this year.

Having said that, it's not clear to me that making anything but tiny changes to XML are likely to be feasible. Maybe some other organization will come along with some new way of representing information in 10 or 15 or 30 years' time and XML will slowly die off, but until then, our hopes of something simpler or with more features are pretty slim. We'd need some compelling use cases.

We know there are some things we need to do in the XML arena, and I think we (I) need to do some more communuty outreach to find people who aren't using XML when they'd like to, because of some weird gotcha, for example.

You're not the only one who would have liked to have seen more changes with XML 1.1, but there's also a really strong community of people who don't want it ever to change in any way. It's not clear to me that we struck a good balance.
